Professional golfer Phil Mickelson has publicly supported the acquittal of Daniel Penny in the death of Jordan Neely on a New York City subway. Mickelson's comments followed the jury's not guilty verdict on the charge of criminally negligent homicide.
Mickelson lauded the decision on social media, stating, "Finally a little common sense. There never should have been a trial." He further commended Penny's actions as selfless and aimed at protecting fellow passengers, adding that those responsible for bringing charges should be removed from their positions.
The case revolved around the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man struggling with mental illness, after Penny restrained him in a chokehold. Penny, a Marine veteran, maintained he acted in self-defense and to protect other passengers from Neely's erratic behavior, which included reportedly making threats.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg acknowledged the jury's decision while also denouncing the threats and harassment directed at his prosecutors during the trial. He stressed the unacceptability of such behavior, urging everyone to condemn it regardless of their stance on the case.
Mickelson had previously voiced support for Penny, expressing hope that someone like Penny would be present in a similar situation.
