Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's partnership with Spotify has concluded, sparking strong reactions, particularly from Spotify executive Bill Simmons. The couple's Archewell Audio and Spotify released a joint statement confirming the mutual decision to part ways, expressing pride in their collaborative work.
Bill Simmons, head of global sports content at Spotify and founder of The Ringer, didn't hold back his criticism, labeling the Sussexes as "grifters" on his podcast. He hinted at a past Zoom meeting with Prince Harry to discuss podcast ideas, calling it "one of my best stories" that he plans to share publicly one day. This isn't the first time Simmons has spoken out against Harry. In January, he expressed embarrassment at sharing the Spotify platform with the prince, criticizing his frequent complaints and interviews.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex originally signed a multiyear deal with Spotify in 2020 with the aim of creating podcasts showcasing diverse voices and perspectives. Their main output was "Archetypes," a podcast hosted by Meghan that ran for 12 episodes starting in August 2022. The show achieved chart-topping success in several countries and even received a People's Choice Award. Despite this success, the partnership has now come to an end.
