Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Over the weekend, two children and one adult lost their lives in separate drowning incidents along the San Jacinto River near Houston, Texas. The incidents occurred in close proximity to recreational areas, raising concerns about water safety, especially during nighttime activities.

On Saturday evening, a 6-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were swimming near the Xtreme Offroad Park and Marina in Crosby when they tragically drowned. A search involving a dive team and sonar equipment led to the recovery of their bodies early Sunday morning. The Xtreme Offroad Park issued a statement expressing condolences and highlighting the unsupervised nature of the children's swimming activity. They emphasized the inherent dangers of the river, particularly at night.

In a separate incident on Sunday night, a man attempting to swim to a small island near Magnolia Gardens Park disappeared. Despite being described as a strong swimmer by his family, the man tragically drowned. His body was recovered later that evening.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant David Jasper underscored the dangers of swimming in the river, regardless of swimming ability. These recent drownings bring the total number of fatalities near the Xtreme Offroad Park to four in the past two months. In June, a 28-year-old man drowned while attempting a rescue, and in May, a 30-year-old man died following an ATV accident in the water.
