A Spate of Onstage Incidents: When Fans Cross the Line

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The unfortunate trend of fans throwing objects at performers during concerts continues, with country star Zach Bryan being the latest victim. During his "Quittin' Time Tour" stop at the Tacoma Dome, an object struck a band member, prompting Bryan to halt the performance and address the audience. A video circulating online shows him asking, "Who threw this? ... Don't throw s--- at concerts, huh?"

This incident follows a string of similar events involving other high-profile artists. Morgan Wallen experienced two such occurrences this year. In June, a fan tossed underwear at him during a Minneapolis concert, which Wallen nonchalantly caught and later threw back into the crowd. The following month, a cellphone hit him in the shoulder during a Denver performance; Wallen again brushed it off, tossing the phone aside.

In July 2023, Kelsea Ballerini was struck in the face by what appeared to be a bracelet during a concert in Boise, Idaho. Visibly shaken, she left the stage momentarily before returning to address the crowd, emphasizing the importance of safety and urging fans to report any concerns. She later confirmed the incident on Instagram, stating that while the object startled her more than it hurt her, she prioritized ensuring the safety of everyone present.

Other artists who have experienced similar incidents include Harry Styles, who was hit by multiple objects, speculated to be Skittles, during a Los Angeles concert in November 2023. A month earlier, he was struck in the groin by a bottle thrown during a Chicago show. Bebe Rexha required stitches after being hit in the face by a cellphone during a June 2023 performance in New York City. Even Pink received an unusual onstage gift: a bag of human ashes, which she handled with grace and confusion during a London concert.

These incidents highlight a concerning trend of disrespect towards performers and raise questions about concert safety and fan behavior.

Ariana Grande also experienced this unsettling trend during her 2019 Coachella performance when a lemon was thrown at her. She addressed the incident onstage and continued her set, even bringing out Justin Bieber for a surprise duet.

These incidents underscore the need for increased awareness and respect for artists during live performances. Throwing objects not only disrupts the show but also poses a serious safety risk to performers and other attendees.
