Ellen Greenberg Case Reopened: Parents Suspect Strangulation, Not Suicide

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The death of Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old teacher found with 20 stab wounds in 2011, is being reexamined after the initial ruling of suicide was reversed by the medical examiner, Dr. Marlon Osbourne. Greenberg's parents, Dr. Josh and Sandee Greenberg, have long believed their daughter's death was a homicide and recently settled a lawsuit with the City of Philadelphia, which will now conduct an independent review of the autopsy. The settlement also includes an undisclosed payment to the Greenbergs.

Dr. Osbourne, who initially ruled the death a homicide before changing it to suicide after a closed-door meeting with police, now states that he has new information that may have affected his prior judgment. This reversal comes 14 years after Greenberg's death, which occurred during a blizzard. She was discovered in her kitchen with a knife in her chest and a partially prepared fruit salad nearby.

The Greenbergs' attorney, Joseph Podraza, expressed satisfaction with the settlement and Dr. Osbourne's revised stance. He believes the city should now classify the death as a homicide, given the evidence. Dr. Josh Greenberg has put forward a new theory, suggesting his daughter was strangled. This theory is supported by private investigator Tom Brennan and retired forensic pathologist Dr. Michelle DuPre, who both point to injuries on Greenberg's neck as indicative of manual strangulation. DuPre also questioned the possibility of self-inflicted stab wounds, particularly those located on Greenberg's back, citing anatomical limitations.

At the time of her death, Greenberg was engaged to Sam Goldberg, who claims to have found her body after returning from the gym. Goldberg has publicly attributed Greenberg's death to mental illness and has not been in contact with the Greenbergs. Dr. Josh Greenberg believes his daughter was confronting her abuser when the situation escalated, leading to her death. He suspects the stab wounds were part of a cover-up. The case is now under the purview of the Chester County District Attorney's Office, which previously designated the case as inactive but open to review if new evidence emerged. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who was Attorney General at the time of the initial suicide ruling, has stated that any new evidence should be promptly shared with the investigators.
