Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General, will face the Senate Judiciary Committee for her confirmation hearing on Wednesday morning. Nominated in late November after the withdrawal of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, Bondi's hearing is scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. EST. She will be questioned by both Republican and Democrat members of the committee.

Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) expressed his hope for a courteous and efficient confirmation process, similar to the one afforded to Attorney General Merrick Garland. The committee comprises a diverse group of senators, including prominent figures like Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Cory Booker (D-NJ).
Senator Durbin, the ranking member, voiced concerns following a meeting with Bondi. He highlighted her prior role as Trump's personal attorney, her involvement in challenging the 2020 election results, and her alignment with Trump's calls to prosecute political rivals. Durbin also expressed apprehension about Bondi's stance on civil rights, including reproductive, voting, and LGBTQ+ rights, questioning her ability to maintain impartiality from Trump's influence.

Durbin reiterated these concerns in a floor speech, emphasizing Bondi's potential conflict of interest given her close ties to the President-elect. Conversely, Senator Grassley praised Bondi's qualifications and extensive legal background following their meeting, promising swift consideration of her nomination.

Trump, in his November announcement, lauded Bondi as a "smart and tough" "AMERICA FIRST Fighter" who would combat crime and enhance national security. Since her nomination, Bondi has garnered endorsements from a bipartisan group of former attorneys general and Justice Department officials.

The confirmation hearing is anticipated to be a closely watched event, with senators likely to delve into Bondi's past actions and her vision for the Justice Department.
