President Trump's Inaugural Celebration: A Night of Balls and First Dances

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former President Donald Trump marked his inauguration with a series of celebratory balls, commencing with the Commander-in-Chief Ball shortly after 10 p.m. ET. Held at the Walter Washington Convention Center, the event honored service members and featured a contemporary rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" for the President's first dance with First Lady Melania Trump. This marked the first of three ball appearances for the newly inaugurated president.

In a brief address, Trump characterized the election as a "tremendous win," attributing his success to his connection with the American people. He also commended his Pentagon chief nominee, Pete Hegseth. Following the Commander-in-Chief Ball, Trump attended the Liberty Ball, also at the convention center, and the Starlight Ball at Union Station.

The Liberty Ball catered to a broader spectrum of Trump supporters and included performances by musical artists such as Jason Aldean, Nelly, and the Village People. The President and First Lady shared another first dance at this event, followed by members of the Trump family and Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance dancing to "Unchained Melody."

The inaugural festivities capped a busy day that included the swearing-in ceremony, a parade, an Oval Office signing ceremony, and the issuance of several executive orders concerning various issues such as border security, diversity and inclusion, the January 6th events, energy and climate, and the federal workforce. The number of executive orders signed on inauguration day surpassed the number signed by Trump in 2017 and by former President Joe Biden on his first day.
