Tourists' Photos and Videos Sought in Neuschwanstein Castle Attack Investigation

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Authorities in Germany are requesting tourists who were near Neuschwanstein Castle during a recent attack to share any photos or videos they may have captured. The incident involved an American man allegedly pushing two American women down a steep slope, tragically resulting in one fatality.

Police have set up a dedicated website to collect evidence and have already received several submissions. However, they believe there are likely more images and videos that could provide crucial insights into the events leading up to and during the attack. They are specifically interested in visuals depicting two young women and a man around 30 years old in the vicinity east of Marienbruecke, a popular bridge offering scenic views of the castle.

The Marienbruecke is a frequent photo spot for visitors admiring Neuschwanstein, a 19th-century castle commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The attack unfolded when the suspect encountered the two American tourists, aged 21 and 22, on a hiking trail. He allegedly persuaded them to follow a path leading to a viewpoint, where he then attacked the younger woman. When the older woman attempted to intervene, the suspect allegedly choked her and pushed her down the slope. He then reportedly assaulted the 21-year-old and also pushed her down the same slope. The women fell a significant distance, and tragically, the 21-year-old succumbed to her injuries. The 22-year-old remains hospitalized but is reportedly in stable condition.

The suspect is currently in custody, facing charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the suspect's background, including how long he had been in Germany. The U.S. Embassy in Berlin has confirmed its awareness of the incident and stated that the consulate in Munich is collaborating with local authorities.
