Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's 2024 presidential campaign has drawn criticism for using footage from the popular Netflix series "Peaky Blinders" in a video targeting Donald Trump's stance on LGBTQ+ issues. The video, shared by the "DeSantis War Room" Twitter account at the end of Pride Month, briefly features actor Cillian Murphy's character, Thomas Shelby.
The show's creators and stars issued a statement condemning the unauthorized use of the footage and expressing their disapproval of the video's message. They emphasized that they did not grant permission for the DeSantis campaign to use clips from the series and do not endorse the narrative presented in the video.

The video criticizes Trump's past actions and statements related to the LGBTQ+ community, including his Pride merchandise, relationship with Caitlyn Jenner, and 2016 pledge to "protect our LGBTQ citizens." The DeSantis campaign introduced the video with the caption, "To wrap up ‘Pride Month,’ let’s hear from the politician who did more than any other Republican to celebrate it…"

The video's release sparked widespread controversy, with critics from both sides of the political spectrum expressing their disapproval. Karl Rove, a former advisor to President George W. Bush, called the video an "unforced error" for DeSantis, questioning the decision to include the "Peaky Blinders" footage, especially given the governor's existing support from conservatives on LGBTQ+ issues.
Richard Grenell, who served as the acting Director of National Intelligence under Trump and is the first openly gay cabinet official, labeled the video "undeniably homophobic." Christina Pushaw, rapid response director for the DeSantis campaign, responded to Grenell's criticism by arguing that opposing federal recognition of Pride Month is not homophobic and characterizing identity politics as "poison."

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also mocked the video during a CNN appearance. The DeSantis campaign has not yet commented on the controversy surrounding the unauthorized use of the "Peaky Blinders" footage.
