A Texas man is facing capital murder charges after allegedly strangling his pregnant wife, resulting in the death of both his wife and their unborn child. The incident occurred on October 7th at their Houston home, where their two young children were also present.

According to police reports, 38-year-old Lee Mongerson Gilley initially claimed his wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, also 38, had attempted an overdose. However, an autopsy revealed injuries consistent with strangulation, leading to a homicide ruling. Christa was approximately eight weeks pregnant at the time.

Gilley's defense attorney, Ed McClees, denies allegations that Gilley intended to flee with his children after being questioned by authorities. McClees states Gilley was merely considering visiting family in South Carolina. He maintains his client is cooperating with all bond conditions.

A judge has restricted Gilley from contact with his children and ordered him to surrender his passport. While Gilley has been released on a $1 million bail, temporary joint custody of the children has been granted to the maternal grandparents and Gilley's sister-in-law.

Christa held a doctorate in physical therapy and specialized in cardiovascular and pulmonary care. Friends describe her as a dedicated caregiver, both professionally and as a mother to her two young children.

Gilley's defense attorney asserts they are awaiting full disclosure of evidence from law enforcement and are committed to uncovering the truth of what happened. He emphasizes Gilley's devastation at the loss of his wife and the mother of his children.
